"Forever Chemicals" Found in Dozens of Georgia Water Systems Over 112 Georgia water systems have tested positive for PFAS, synthetic chemicals linked to serious health risks. Extreme levels have been detected in Calhoun, the Augusta area, and Clayton County. An Emory University study found that 25% of blood samples taken from Calhoun and Rome-area residents had PFAS levels high enough to warrant additional medical screening. Rural and Urban Homes Face Different Risks
Urban areas tend to have more advanced filtration, but can have higher levels of chemical byproducts from heavy treatment. Rural communities especially those on private wells face risks from untested contaminants, pesticides, and industrial runoff. In both cases, aging infrastructure can introduce contaminants after water leaves the treatment plant. Tappwater
